O’Neill Criticizes $150B Stimulus Package

Congressional hopeful says plan is no more than a ‘Band-Aid on a bleeding artery’

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio (Feb. 18, 2008) – Democratic candidate for Congress Bill O’Neill today questioned the effectiveness of the $150 billion economic stimulus package signed into law last week by President Bush, saying it does “virtually nothing to repair the damage done to our economy by trade agreements.”

“While President Bush and Congress are patting themselves on the back, this package will do very little to repair the damage done to our economy by the grossly unfair trade agreements of the past decade or so,” O’Neill said. “I know that everyone appreciates getting a check from Uncle Sam, but the question we have to ask is ‘Will this stimulus package fix the fundamental flaws in our economy?’ And the answer is no. Increasing the budget deficit at our children’s expense is not the way to put our economic house back in order.”

“Once again Congress is putting a Band-Aid on a bleeding artery,” he said. “And as any nurse knows that just won’t work.”
