O’Neill on State of the Union
Northeast Ohioans ‘want to hear that things are going to change in Washington’
WASHINGTON – Democratic candidate for Ohio’s 14th congressional district Bill O’Neill is available for comment in advance and in response to President Bush’s State of the Union speech tonight. A brief statement is below:
“Many of us are grateful that this is President Bush’s final State of the Union address. His speech before Congress tonight is just one more sign that the city on the Potomac is painfully out of touch with the rest of the country. If the advance copies of the speech are accurate, tonight President Bush will unveil zero new idea and zero new proposals.
“The past six months, I’ve been hearing what’s on the mind of Northeast Ohioans. What they want to hear is a new vision for moving this country forward.
“They want to hear how Congress and the president will work together to help working Americans get real relief – and not just a Band-Aid - from a lagging economy. And they want to hear a plan to restore the hundreds of thousands of lost good-paying manufacturing jobs and a common-sense trade policy that puts America first.
“They want to hear a plan to get our troops out of harm’s way in Iraq – and to put pressure on Iraqis to take control of their country’s progress.
“They want a plan that allows every American access to the same health care that our leaders in Washington give themselves. They want to know that they will never lose their health care, even if they lose their job.
“They want to hear that the White House will lead Congress in taking big steps toward reducing our dependency on foreign oil and our greenhouse gas emissions.
“But most of all they want to hear that things aren’t going to be the same. Northeast Ohioans are tired of the job that Washington is doing – and they are desperate for leadership to take this country in a new direction. And I’m running for Congress to do just that.”
